Net Metering 405 (NMR-405) Opt-in

Net Metering 405 (NMR-405) Opt-in

Net metering customers who applied for and/or installed a private rooftop solar system 25 kilowatts or less on or after June 15, 2017 are eligible for the NMR-405 Rider. NMR-405 customers receive monthly netting of the electricity delivered by NV Energy and the electricity they export to the grid, and a credit applicable to their tier.

Customers currently in the NMR-G or NMR-A rate class have the option to move to the NMR-405 rate class. NMR-405 rates will be applied to your account for the first full billing period following your notification of opt-in to NV Energy. Please review the information carefully and make the best choice for you. Customers who opt in to the NMR-405 rates will not be able to switch back to their former rate class.

Overview

Assembly Bill 405, which was passed by the Nevada Legislature and signed into law by Governor Brian Sandoval in June of 2017, established new rules for rooftop solar customers with systems 25 kilowatts or less who applied for and installed a private rooftop solar system on or after June 15, 2017.

Assembly Bill 405 places all net metering customers in the same rate class as their otherwise applicable group of non-solar customers – meaning they pay the same Basic Service Charge and energy rate.

The NMR-405 rate class treats energy that is produced by the system, but not used onsite by the customer (exported energy) differently than the NMR-G and NMR-A rate classes. NMR-405 customers receive monthly netting of the electricity delivered by NV Energy and the electricity they export to the grid. The excess energy, which is the remaining exported energy after monthly netting is accounted for, is credited an amount based on when their rooftop solar application was received by NV Energy:

Credits are tied to the premise and will be applied to future billing periods in which the customer consumes more than they produce. The credit cannot be applied to the Basic Service Charge or to charges for other services that NV Energy provides (i.e., natural gas). The credits are non-transferrable and non-payable in the event the customer transfers service to another premise or ceases service from NV Energy. Visit the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada website for current capacity.

Bill Comparison

Net metering customers are charged the same rates for the services they receive from NV Energy as their non-net metering counterparts, and are billed – at a minimum – the monthly service charge and public policy charges on delivered energy. The difference between the net metering rate classes is how exported energy is treated.
Rate ClassExcess Energy Credit TypeHow it Works
NMR-GKilowatt-hour credit
  • The energy your system produces is netted against the energy delivered to you by NV Energy. Any extra energy produced is banked for use as a credit on future bills.
  • The credit is 1:1, meaning you are credited one kWh for every excess kWh.
  • Remaining, or banked, credits will be applied to any energy delivered by NV Energy on future bills.
  • Banked credits at the end of the year are carried over to future bills.
  • If you transfer service to another location or end service with NV Energy, banked credits are non-transferrable and non-payable.
NMR-AMonetary credit, with possible year-end payout
  • You receive monetary credit for ALL energy you export, regardless of how much is delivered to you by NV Energy.
  • The credit rate will decline over time and will likely become lower in value than that of the NMR-G and/or NMR-405 credit. NMR-A credit decreases will take place on January 1, 2022, 2025, and 2028.
  • The credits can be applied to any and all charges.
  • Remaining credits at the end of the year will be paid to you by check.
  • If you transfer service to another location or end service with NV Energy, any remaining credit after the final bill will be paid to you by check.
NMR-405Monetary credit
  • You receive credit for any remaining exported energy after monthly netting of the energy NV Energy delivers and the energy we receive from your system.
  • The credit rate is based on the tier assigned when your rooftop solar application was received by NV Energy, and will apply for 20 years. Credits range from 95% to 75% (see above overview).
  • The credits can be applied to future energy consumption charges. Credits cannot be applied to the Basic Service Charge or other services that NV Energy provides (i.e. natural gas).
  • Remaining credits at the end of the year are carried over to future bills.
  • If you transfer service to another location or end service with NV Energy, remaining credits are non-transferrable and non-payable.
