NV Energy’s New Solar Projects to Replace Last Owned Coal Plant

NV Energy’s New Solar Projects to Replace Last Owned Coal Plant

Jan 17, 2022 1:55 PM

The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) recently approved NV Energy’s request to add two new solar plus storage projects, which will total 600 megawatts of energy and provide 480 megawatts of energy storage capacity – enough to power 127,000 homes.

The two projects will be built in Valmy, NV and will replace the coal fired North Valmy Generating Station, NV Energy’s only remaining coal fired power plant, by 2025.

The two new projects are:

• Iron Point Solar Project – A 250-megawatt solar photovoltaic system paired with 200 megawatts of battery storage. The project will be located in Humboldt County, NV and has an expected in-service date of December 2023. It is being developed and built by Primergy Solar.

• Hot Pot Solar Project – A 350-megawatt solar photovoltaic system paired with 280 megawatts of battery storage. The project will be located in Humboldt County, NV and has an expected in-service date of December 2024. It is being developed and built by Primergy Solar.

The Hot Pot Solar and Iron Point Solar projects will create several hundred construction jobs, with the bulk to be performed by the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers (IBEW) through a labor agreement with project developer Primergy Solar and will provide up to 16 permanent positions.

NV Energy is well on its way to meeting Nevada’s renewable portfolio standard of 50 percent by 2030. The newly approved projects will be added to NV Energy’s current portfolio of 55 geothermal, solar, solar plus storage, hydro, wind, biomass and supported rooftop solar projects both in service and under development.
